Cannibal solar eruptions merge to slam into Earth

When a fast-moving cloud of solar plasma overtakes a slower one, they combine into a massive magnetic storm that can trigger blackouts and vivid light shows.

The sun occasionally releases massive clouds of magnetized plasma known as coronal mass ejections. While these eruptions are common, they sometimes engage in a celestial pursuit. If a secondary eruption is launched at a higher velocity than one preceding it, the faster cloud can catch up to and engulf its slower predecessor. This creates a single, massive cannibal eruption that hits Earth with significantly more force than the individual clouds would have alone.
