High-altitude lakes held back by thin walls of ice can suddenly rupture, triggering a feedback loop that melts a massive drainage tunnel in mere hours.

Deep in the Alps or the Andes, a tranquil lake perched on a glacier can vanish in a single afternoon, transformed into a wall of water moving with the force of a small river. These events, known as glacial lake outburst floods, occur when the ice or rock dams holding back meltwater finally give way. Unlike traditional dam failures, these bursts are driven by a self-reinforcing cycle of heat. As a tiny trickle of water begins to leak through a crack in the ice, the friction of the moving water generates warmth. This heat melts the surrounding ice, widening the hole and allowing more water to rush through, which further accelerates the melting until a massive tunnel is bored through the glacier.
