A small battery can turn a cardboard box into a bomb

Modern postal threats use the intense chemical energy of lithium to shred heavy cardboard at speeds reaching 500 meters per second.

A standard lithium battery is no longer just a power source; in the hands of a saboteur, it becomes a high-temperature igniter. Recent forensic trials have shown that when these batteries are rigged to fail, they undergo a process called thermal runaway, reaching temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat is sufficient to detonate a small charge of ANFO, a common industrial explosive.
