Next generation TVs can broadcast data alongside video
Modern television towers are being transformed into massive wireless routers, capable of beaming software updates and emergency maps to cars without using a single byte of cellular data.
While traditional television signals only carry sound and image, a new standard called ATSC 3.0 allows broadcasters to treat their airwaves like a massive wireless pipe. This technology, known as datacasting, can squeeze 25 megabits of pure internet protocol data alongside a 4K video stream. It uses a sophisticated method of vibrating radio waves that makes the signal nearly immune to the 'ghosting' interference caused by tall buildings.
