Thorny devils drink rain through their skin
Australia's thorny devil lizard uses intricate skin grooves to channel rainwater directly to its mouth, a remarkable adaptation for desert survival.
Australia's thorny devil lizard, or Moloch horridus, has an incredible way to survive in the desert: it drinks through its skin! Its body is covered in tiny grooves that act like miniature channels. When rain or dew lands on its back, these grooves use capillary action to funnel every drop directly to the corners of its mouth. This ingenious system allows the lizard to hydrate without needing puddles, which are rare in its harsh habitat. It can absorb up to 10 percent of its body weight in water, a true master of desert survival.
