Chimpanzees build complex beds with pillows and blankets
Long before humans designed the first brick, our primate cousins were weaving multi-layered mattresses from specific tree species to ensure a parasite-free night of deep sleep.
A chimpanzee does not simply lie down on a branch; it engineers a home. Every night, these great apes spend several minutes meticulously weaving a circular frame from sturdy ironwood branches, which they then line with a soft mattress of leafy twigs. Research in Uganda's Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve shows they specifically select Ugandan ironwood because it is the strongest and most resilient material available, capable of supporting a 100-pound primate high above the forest floor.
