Leaf-tailed geckos are masters of disguise
Leaf-tailed geckos in Madagascar are camouflage experts, using unique body shapes and colors to perfectly mimic tree bark, making them nearly invisible to predators.
Madagascar's leaf-tailed geckos, genus Uroplatus, are camouflage champions. These small reptiles have evolved flattened bodies, irregular skin flaps, and tails resembling dried leaves or bark, allowing them to vanish into tree bark. This incredible mimicry helps them avoid predators like birds during the day. With about 14 known species, their adaptation highlights nature's ingenuity in a region where over 90 percent of wildlife is unique. When threatened, some even flash a bright orange mouth to startle attackers.
