Giovanni Pastrone's 1914 masterpiece 'Cabiria' set a new benchmark for cinematic scale, utilizing a 100-foot replica of a Punic ship and thousands of extras. To capture these enormous environments, Pastrone invented a trolley system that allowed the camera to move smoothly toward or away from the action. This 'tracking shot' broke the static, stage-like perspective of early cinema and invited the audience to enter the physical space of the film.
