The 1971 hijacking by D.B. Cooper remains the only unsolved case of air piracy in American history after the suspect vanished into a freezing storm with 200,000 dollars.
On November 24, 1971, a man known as Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305, demanding 200,000 dollars and four parachutes. After releasing the passengers in Seattle, he ordered the crew to fly toward Mexico and jumped from the rear stairs into the rugged wilderness of Washington State. Despite a massive FBI investigation codenamed NORJAK, no trace of Cooper was ever found.
