Social scientists once believed that as nations became more technologically advanced, religious belief would inevitably fade, yet recent data shows that American religiosity is experiencing a surprising and resilient resurgence.

Modernization theory long suggested that scientific and economic progress would lead to a purely secular world. However, recent data challenges this, as the percentage of Americans identifying as religiously unaffiliated dropped from 36.2 percent in 2022 to 31.8 percent by 2025.
