Emperor Iyasu I, known as Iyasu the Great, was the last truly powerful monarch of Ethiopia's Gondarine period before the empire fractured into regional strife. During his reign from 1682 until his death in 1706, he was celebrated as a fierce warrior and a brilliant administrator who reformed the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the national tax system.
