In 572, a Lombard king was murdered in a plot involving his own wife

The reign of Alboin, the fierce king who led the Lombards into Italy, came to a violent end in 572 when his own wife orchestrated a deadly palace coup alongside the Byzantines.

King Alboin successfully led the Lombards across the Alps to conquer much of northern Italy, but his triumph was short-lived. According to legend, he forced his wife, Rosamund, to drink from a cup made from her father's skull, a move that sealed his fate.
