On May 10, 1997, the Qayen earthquake devastated the Khorasan Province of eastern Iran, claiming over 1,500 lives. The region's traditional adobe architecture, while beautiful, proved fatal as the heavy mud-brick walls collapsed instantly under the seismic force. In the aftermath, approximately 50,000 people were left homeless as nearly 100 villages were damaged or destroyed.
