On May 10, 1941, Rudolf Hess took off from Germany in a Messerschmitt fighter, evading both German and British defenses to parachute into a Scottish field. As the Deputy Fuhrer, he believed he could bypass Winston Churchill and negotiate a peace deal with the Duke of Hamilton to end the war between Germany and Britain.
