Late reinforcements in 1864 helped the Confederacy win a surprise victory at Mansfield
The Union's ambitious Red River Campaign met a disastrous end in 1864 when a desperate Confederate counterattack at Mansfield turned the tide of the war in the Trans-Mississippi theater.
On April 8, 1864, the Battle of Mansfield saw Confederate General Richard Taylor risk everything against a much larger Union force. Despite being outnumbered, Taylor launched an aggressive attack that capitalized on the narrow, wooded terrain which prevented the Union from deploying their full strength.
