The iconic peace symbol was first displayed in 1958 during a London protest

Designed as a plea for nuclear disarmament, the world's most recognized peace symbol made its public debut in London in 1958 during a protest against weapons of mass destruction.

The iconic peace sign was created by artist Gerald Holtom for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. It first appeared on April 4, 1958, during a march from London to a nuclear weapons research center. The design actually combines the semaphore signals for the letters 'N' and 'D', standing for Nuclear Disarmament.
