In March 1920, the historic city of Shushi became the backdrop for a violent upheaval that fundamentally altered the ethnic landscape of the Nagorno-Karabakh region for the next century.
Following the end of World War I, tensions in the Caucasus reached a breaking point as Azeri and Turkish forces, supported by local irregulars, launched a devastating assault on the Armenian quarter of Shushi. The conflict resulted in the destruction of much of the city's cultural heritage and a massive shift in its population.
