Ivan Pavlov famously showed how dogs could be conditioned to salivate at a bell, revealing that learned associations shape many involuntary behaviors.
In the late 1890s, Ivan Pavlov discovered classical conditioning by making dogs drool at the sound of a bell. He noticed dogs salivated for food, but also for the lab assistants who brought it. This led him to pair a neutral bell sound with food repeatedly.
