Fungi are genetically closer to animals than plants, vital for Earth's ecosystems, and include the planet's largest organism: a 2,385-acre honey fungus.

Believe it or not, fungi are genetically closer to animals than plants! Scientists were surprised to find that fungi and animals share a more recent common ancestor. Both fungi and animals get energy from other organisms, store it as glycogen, and even use chitin – the same material found in insect exoskeletons. This makes fungi so unique they have their own kingdom.
