The February 26 Incident of 1936 was a violent coup attempt that saw 1,500 Japanese soldiers occupy central Tokyo. The rebels targeted the nation's leadership, successfully assassinating the Finance Minister and several other high-ranking statesmen. Their goal was to restore absolute power to the Emperor and eliminate the influence of political parties.
