In a calculated move to expand its imperial footprint in 1932, Japan established the puppet state of Manzhouguo and installed Puyi, the deposed last emperor of China, as its figurehead leader.
The creation of Manzhouguo in 1932 marked a significant escalation of Japanese expansionism in East Asia. By installing Puyi, who had been forced off the Chinese throne as a child in 1912, Japan sought to give their occupation a veneer of historical legitimacy.
