In February 1951, roughly 4,500 American and French soldiers found themselves surrounded by 25,000 Chinese troops at the remote crossroads of Chipyong-ni. Despite the freezing temperatures and being outnumbered five-to-one, the UN forces refused to retreat. They dug into the frozen earth and held their perimeter through waves of night attacks.
