National Foundation Day, or 'Kenkoku Kinen no Hi,' traces Japan's origins back to its first mythical ruler, Emperor Jimmu. According to ancient chronicles, Jimmu was a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu and established the imperial line over 2,600 years ago.
