Japan honors its ancient roots on February 11, a day marking the legendary ascension of Emperor Jimmu in 660 BC and the traditional birth of the Japanese nation.
National Foundation Day, or 'Kenkoku Kinen no Hi,' traces Japan's origins back to its first mythical ruler, Emperor Jimmu. According to ancient chronicles, Jimmu was a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu and established the imperial line over 2,600 years ago.
