Dom Justo Takayama was a powerful Japanese feudal lord who chose a life of poverty and exile in the Philippines rather than abandon his Christian faith during a period of intense persecution.
In 1615, the 'Samurai of Christ' died in Manila just forty days after being expelled from his homeland. As a high-ranking daimyo, Takayama controlled vast lands but surrendered everything when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu banned Christianity. While many peers recanted to save their status, Takayama remained steadfast, leading 300 Japanese Christians into exile.
