Trees are mostly made of air

Trees build their mass primarily from carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere, not the soil, making them crucial carbon sinks that lock away atmospheric carbon.

Most people think trees grow from soil, but their mass actually comes from the air! Trees pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use sunlight to transform it into solid wood through photosynthesis. An oak tree weighing two tons contains about 1.5 tons of carbon that was once CO2 floating in the sky. This means trees are essentially solid atmosphere.
