A massive dark gap has opened on the Sun's surface this week
A colossal dark region known as a coronal hole recently emerged on the Sun, stretching wider than sixty Earths and releasing powerful streams of high-speed solar wind into space.
A vast dark patch called a coronal hole has appeared in the Sun's outer atmosphere, allowing solar winds to escape at incredible speeds. These regions are cooler and less dense than their surroundings, which makes them appear nearly black in ultraviolet light. Unlike sunspots caused by tangled magnetic fields, these holes feature open field lines that act as a highway for charged particles.
