The first deep-space weather station launched into orbit 66 years ago today
Pioneer 1 became the first spacecraft launched by NASA in 1958, marking a historic leap in our ability to study the magnetic fields and radiation environments beyond Earth.
Pioneer 1 launched on October 11, 1958, as the very first mission led by the newly formed NASA. Although a programming error prevented it from reaching the Moon as intended, the probe successfully traveled over 70,000 miles into space. This journey allowed it to function as a deep-space weather station, providing the first-ever measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field.
