A bus-sized space rock is making a remarkably close approach to Earth
An asteroid roughly the size of a city bus is passing within the moon's orbit today, providing astronomers with a rare opportunity to study a near-Earth object at close range.
Asteroid 2024 GJ2 is currently zooming past our planet at a distance of just 12,000 miles. This is significantly closer than the moon, which sits roughly 238,000 miles away. Measuring between 10 and 16 feet long, the rock is comparable in size to a standard school bus.
