While many imagine deserts as scorching seas of sand, the Antarctic Desert holds the title of the world's largest, spanning over 14 million square kilometers of frozen terrain.
Deserts are scientifically defined by low precipitation rather than temperature. Since Antarctica receives less than 50 millimeters of rain or snow annually in its interior, it qualifies as a polar desert. This massive frozen wilderness is larger than the Sahara and holds about 70 percent of the planet's freshwater locked within its ice.
