A giant gap in the sun's atmosphere is sending fast solar winds toward Earth

Enormous openings in the sun's outer atmosphere known as coronal holes release high-speed streams of solar particles that can travel millions of miles to interact with Earth's magnetic field.

Coronal holes are vast regions where the sun's magnetic field opens up, allowing hot plasma to escape into space as high-speed solar wind. These winds can reach speeds of nearly 500 miles per second, significantly faster than the normal solar wind.
