The Kalevala is a 19th-century compilation of ancient oral folklore that fundamentally shaped modern fantasy literature. J.R.R. Tolkien was so enamored with these tales of wizards and magical artifacts that he learned Finnish specifically to read them in their original form. This linguistic passion eventually led to the creation of Quenya, the high-elven language in his famous novels.
