A visitor from another star is spraying water across our solar system
The interstellar comet 2I/Borisov is actively releasing vast quantities of water vapor as it journeys through our planetary neighborhood, marking the first time scientists have detected water from another star system.
Comet 2I/Borisov made history in 2019 as the first interstellar comet ever detected by humans. As it neared our sun, heat caused the icy traveler to sublimate, releasing nearly 30 liters of water every second. This discovery confirmed that water-rich icy bodies exist in other corners of the galaxy, much like they do in our own solar system.
