Smart bridges are now using digital sensors to repair their own corrosion damage

Innovative infrastructure projects are utilizing embedded sensors and electrochemical systems to detect structural decay and automatically trigger chemical reactions that halt rust before it weakens the bridge.

Modern smart bridges utilize fiber-optic sensors and electrochemical technology to combat the silent threat of rust. When these internal sensors detect rising acidity or moisture levels that indicate corrosion, they trigger a process called cathodic protection. This system sends a small electrical current through the steel reinforcement, effectively neutralizing the chemical reaction that causes metal to decay.
