AI just found 25 new sustainable magnets for electric vehicles
Artificial intelligence recently accelerated centuries of material science by identifying 25 new permanent magnet recipes that function without the environmentally damaging rare-earth metals typically required for electric vehicle motors.
A specialized AI platform developed by the company Materials Nexus identified these sustainable magnetic materials in just three months, a feat that would traditionally take decades of laboratory trial and error. The most promising candidate, MagNex, requires no neodymium or dysprosium, metals that are currently subject to volatile supply chains and carbon-intensive mining practices.
