Emotional events stick in our memory

Emotional experiences etch themselves deeply into our memory, making joyful triumphs or heart-wrenching tragedies far more vivid and lasting than everyday moments.

Our brains remember emotional moments, like a surprise party or a scary accident, far more vividly than everyday events. This happens because the amygdala, a key brain region, activates and strengthens these memories. It's an evolutionary trick, helping us learn from past dangers and joys. This is why you might clearly recall where you were during major historical events, like the 1986 Challenger disaster, even decades later. While these memories feel sharper, research shows they can sometimes contain inaccuracies.
