Social media connects us but can also isolate
Social media offers connection and community, yet its overuse can paradoxically deepen feelings of isolation and loneliness, impacting mental health for billions worldwide.
Social media platforms, used by over 4.8 billion people globally, can foster belonging by connecting users across distances and creating online communities. During the 2020 pandemic, 53% of US adults used social media for emotional connection. However, excessive scrolling can lead to social comparison and feelings of inadequacy. Limiting use to 30 minutes daily reduced loneliness in young adults, highlighting the need for balanced engagement to harness benefits without the pitfalls.
