Why do children itch at night?

Pinworms, common intestinal parasites, cause intense nighttime anal itching in children due to egg-laying, highlighting the importance of hygiene to prevent widespread reinfection.

Pinworms, tiny intestinal parasites, are a common cause of intense nighttime anal itching, especially in children. These thread-like worms live in human intestines and are easily spread through contaminated hands or surfaces, particularly in schools and homes. Female pinworms migrate to the anal area after dark to lay thousands of microscopic eggs, causing irritation and prompting scratching that further spreads the infection. While not dangerous, the discomfort disrupts sleep and can lead to secondary skin infections. Hundreds of millions are affected annually, with children aged 5-10 most vulnerable. Despite simple treatments, reinfection is common without thorough cleaning and hygiene education.
