Ozone holes form over Earth's poles
Human-made chemicals create ozone holes over Earth's poles, thinning our vital atmospheric shield against harmful UV rays, but global action is slowly healing it.
Our planet's protective ozone layer, which blocks over 99% of harmful UV radiation, develops "holes" primarily over the poles. These are regions of severe ozone depletion caused by human-made chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The most famous is the Antarctic ozone hole, discovered in 1985.
