Allbirds shoes are made from wool and eucalyptus
By engineering textiles from New Zealand merino wool and South African eucalyptus, Allbirds replaced traditional petroleum-based synthetics with renewable fibers that naturally regulate temperature and reduce manufacturing emissions.
The footwear industry traditionally relies on petroleum-based synthetics, but Allbirds engineered a proprietary textile using 17.5-micron diameter ZQ-certified merino wool. This specific wool fiber, sourced from New Zealand, naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture without the chemical coatings found in standard athletic shoes. By utilizing these renewable fibers, the company produces a carbon footprint significantly lower than the industry average of 12.5 kg CO2e per pair.
