Ancient Aztecs floated gardens on a lake

The ancient Aztecs built incredible floating gardens, called chinampas, on Lake Texcoco, the site of modern Mexico City. From the 14th century, they constructed these artificial islands from mud, vegetation, and reeds, anchored by wooden stakes. This ingenious method transformed shallow, brackish waters into fertile farmland, allowing them to grow up to seven crops annually.
