The Turtle, often considered the world's first functional submarine, launched in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. Designed by David Bushnell, this hand-cranked wooden submersible aimed to attach explosives to British warships. On its maiden voyage, operator Ezra Lee attempted to attack the HMS Eagle but failed to penetrate its copper hull, forcing him to abandon the mission.
