Goffin cockatoos recognize when something is permanently broken
After just one failed attempt, these clever parrots can identify when a tool or object has lost its function forever, a key building block for understanding death.
The ability to distinguish between a temporary glitch and a permanent failure is a sophisticated cognitive trait. While humans do this instinctively, most animals struggle to realize when an object is irreparably broken. Goffin cockatoos, however, have demonstrated they can categorize objects as persistently non-functional after experiencing just a single negative event. This rapid learning allows them to abandon useless efforts and focus their energy elsewhere.
