The ability to distinguish between a temporary glitch and a permanent failure is a sophisticated cognitive trait. While humans do this instinctively, most animals struggle to realize when an object is irreparably broken. Goffin cockatoos, however, have demonstrated they can categorize objects as persistently non-functional after experiencing just a single negative event.
