A new orbital network will monitor airborne threats in dangerous regions where traditional surveillance planes are too vulnerable to fly.

For decades, the military has relied on specialized aircraft to track moving targets from the sky. However, as sophisticated anti-aircraft systems make certain airspaces too dangerous for manned planes to enter, the theater of surveillance is shifting into orbit. A new system of satellite constellations is being developed to provide continuous oversight of these contested zones from the safety of space.
