A Japanese creator god fled the underworld to escape decay
The Japanese god of creation once ventured into the land of the dead, only to be chased out by the rotting, maggot-filled corpse of his wife.
Desperate to bring back his deceased wife Izanami, the god Izanagi traveled to Yomi, the Japanese underworld. When he arrived, Izanami begged him not to look at her, but curiosity won out. He lit a tooth of his comb as a torch and was horrified to see her body crawling with maggots and inhabited by eight thunder gods. His flight from the underworld became a desperate race for survival.
