Born in the middle of a battlefield, the Aztec patron god entered the world fully grown and wielding a weapon made of blue fire.
The birth of Huitzilopochtli is one of the most violent episodes in world myth. His mother, Coatlicue, became pregnant after a ball of feathers fell into her lap. Her other 400 children, led by her daughter Coyolxauhqui, felt dishonored and launched a lethal assault on their mother at the mountain of Coatepec. Just as they attacked, Huitzilopochtli sprang from the womb in full battle armor.
