The Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu once retreated into a rocky cave after her brother, the storm god, threw a flayed horse through her weaving hall. With the world in a permanent eclipse, the other 800 gods gathered to lure her out. They didn't use prayers; they used a party. A minor goddess named Ame-no-Uzume overturned a tub, stood on it, and performed a lewd, rhythmic dance that caused the gods to roar with laughter.
