The cornea is the only living tissue in the body without blood vessels
The cornea is the only living tissue in the human body that contains no blood vessels, instead drawing its oxygen directly from the air and tears.
To remain perfectly transparent for vision, the 0.5mm-thick cornea must remain avascular. It receives 80% of its required oxygen through diffusion from the atmosphere and the tear film that coats the eye. This unique setup makes the cornea a master of 'deturgescence,' using a specialized pump to keep the tissue at exactly 4% hydration.
