The Welsh king Pwyll earned a supernatural alliance by refusing to sleep with a goddess

In the Welsh 'Mabinogion', King Pwyll secured a powerful supernatural alliance by demonstrating the rare virtue of sexual restraint while in the underworld.

The medieval Welsh text 'The First Branch of the Mabinogi' recounts how Pwyll, the Prince of Dyfed, traded places and physical appearances with Arawn, the King of Annwn (the underworld), for one year. When the year ended and the two kings reverted to their true forms, Arawn was so impressed by Pwyll's integrity that he granted him eternal friendship and expanded his earthly realm.
