Two different seas can flow on top of each other in opposite directions

The Turkish Straits host a rare maritime phenomenon where two massive bodies of water flow directly on top of one another in opposite directions due to differences in density.

In the narrow Bosporus strait, a hidden underwater river flows North while the surface water flows South. The upper layer consists of brackish water from the Black Sea, while a denser, saltier Mediterranean current flows underneath at speeds of 1.2 meters per second. This dual-flow system acts like a massive hydraulic pump, flushing nearly one percent of the Black Sea's volume every single day.
