A massive underwater river flows backward beneath the surface of the Bosporus
Deep beneath the surface of the Bosporus Strait, a massive river of dense saltwater flows in the opposite direction of the surface current, carving deep channels into the seabed.
The Bosporus Strait is a rare hydraulic marvel where two layers of water flow in opposite directions simultaneously. While surface water rushes from the Black Sea toward the Marmara Sea at speeds up to 4 knots, a dense, salty undercurrent flows backward along the bottom. Driven by a 1.2-meter difference in sea levels, this underwater river carries 300,000 cubic meters of water per second.
